K-12 Education

Macomb County is home to 21 public school districts and 225 public schools. Each strives to provide a progressive and effective education to nearly 130,000 students in grades k-12. There are also 10 public school academies in the county and nearly 50 private and parochial schools in the county.

There are 28 public high schools in the county. Each provides students with opportunities to participate in a Career Technical Education to prepare them for successful career entry, advancement and/or continuing education. Some of the most popular programs include business services/technology, marketing, drafting, graphics/print communication, hospitality and food service and auto service technician.

Area high schools also participate in a variety of school-to-work programs which enable students to work while earning credits necessary for graduation. While this provides a very valuable lesson for youth, it also provides opportunities for employers to “grow-their-own” employees while reinforcing positive work ethics.

In 2005, more than 90 percent of all graduating high school seniors chose to enhance their employability skills through some type of formal education including acceptance at a four-year college or university, enrollment in an associates, technical or apprenticeship program, or enlistment in the military. Macomb County families recognize the important connection between education and the ability to be gainfully employed.
