SBC Ameritech is the dominant telephone company in Macomb County and Michigan, with approximately 78 percent of the state’s local exchange market, followed by Verizon with 12 percent.
In keeping with national trends, wireless penetration has been climbing in the Detroit Region in recent years. A 2003 study by Scarborough Research indicates that 74 percent of Detroit households rely on cellular phone service. This ranks the city second nationally in cell phone penetration, with Atlanta claiming 75 percent.
All Macomb County businesses have access to T1 or higher broadband internet connections. Residential high-speed access is available throughout most of the county through cable modems and DSL. The LinkMacomb Initiative, funded by the State of Michigan’s pioneering LinkMichigan program, is working to further facilitate development of the county’s broadband infrastructure.
