There are a total of seven airports within an hours drive or less of any business in Macomb County. There are three passenger and cargo airports, two cargo only airports, and three corporate/cargo airports. In addition the region boasts 60 plus airfields. These airports provide complete air service including direct international passenger and freight/cargo flights, domestic services, charters and specialized customer service accommodate individuals and corporations.

The largest commercial airport is Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, often referred to as Detroit Metro. The airport encompasses 6,700 acres with 6 runways, 139 gates, 18,000+ badged employees and 20,000 parking spaces. In 2004, Detroit Metro served more than 35 million passengers, more than 2.8 million international passengers, and 488,829,083 lbs. of cargo.
The airport ranks 7th in the world for operations, and 11th in passengers in North America and 18th in the world. It’s estimated economic impact is $14.2 million.
Detroit Metro serves as Northwest Airlines’ largest world hub. Northwest Airlines has invested more than $1.6 billion to develop their own terminal, adding 99 gates, 18 luggage carousels, an 11,000 space parking garage, an elevated people mover system and dozens of other amenities.
Several foreign flag carriers, as well as, domestic airlines offer direct non-stop flights to 9 countries. They also offer direct one-stop flight to hundreds of domestic and international cities with continuing services around the world.

Additionally, Macomb County is home to Selfridge Air National Guard Base, a joint United States military reserve and National Guard training facility near Mount Clemens, Michigan. Selfridge is home of many diversified units, including elements of the Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Selfridge takes pride in being the only reserve forces base to have permanently assigned units from all five of the uniformed services.
Today, Selfridge Air National Guard Base is one of the busiest, most diverse military installations in the United States. A base of operations for five military branches of service, Selfridge encompasses some 680 buildings, 9,000 and 4,870 foot runways, over a million square yards of taxiway and paved aircraft parking ramps, thirty-nine miles of paved roads, and seven miles of railroad track.
The base is known as "The Home of Generals" because over 150 generals spent parts of their careers at Selfridge.
Recent military construction improvements to Selfridge include $5.2 million to replace the Control Tower/Radar Approach Control Center and $9.8 million for an infrastructure upgrade.
