Highways & Roads

A well-maintained network of 166 miles of freeways and 2,942 miles of primary roads provide multiple access routes for Macomb County businesses and residents. Two interstates, I-94 and I-696, connect Macomb to the rest of the state, nation, and Canada. Access to a third interstate, I-75, is provided by connecting routes on I-696 and M-59. A grid system of “mile roads” traverse the county from east to west, intersected by multiple arterial roads and freeways.

The I-94 expressway winds through southeast Macomb, and continues north through St. Clair County to the Blue Water Bridge to Canada, a major international border crossing for both truck and rail. Heading south, I-94 connects Macomb with the city of Detroit and the Detroit-Metro Airport, one of the nations busiest.

Macomb County’s efficient system of roads and highways provide regional, national, and international access.

Approximately 42% of all Canada-United States trade flows through the Michigan – Southwestern Ontario Frontier Gateway, of which approximately 74% is moved by trucks. The Passenger traffic generated from the international crossings generate millions of dollars for Macomb County and the regional economy. In 2002, of the 20 million passenger vehicle crossings, 25 percent were work related, 40 percent were dining, entertainment, and casino related, and 12 percent were for shopping.

State highway M-59 (Hall road) recently underwent a $300-million widening, triggering a frenzy of construction. Up to 12 lanes wide at parts, expansive shopping centers and housing developments mark its flanks. The road links high growth areas in Macomb County with neighbors to the west in Oakland County.

I-696, one of the Detroit Region’s major east-west freeways, travels through Warren, Center Line, and Roseville in southern Macomb County. I-696 handles over 200,000 vehicles daily.
