Think of this number as the Social Security number for your business. Generally, the IRS requires every business to obtain this, unless it is a sole proprietor with no employees. (However, we still recommend you obtain a FEIN, especially if you must also obtain a Sales Tax License.)
You can obtain a FEIN by phone (800-829-4933), online form or by mailing in the printable application form.
Your business must be registered with the state for Michigan Business Taxes. On the same form you will indicate whether you need a sales tax license. This should be done at least six weeks before starting your business, and can only be done by mail or fax.
For more information, or assistance in determining whether you need a sales tax license, please call the Michigan Department of Treasury, (Sales, Use and Withholding Tax Division) at: 517-636-4660.

While most burgeoning entrepreneurs believe that they must secure a “license” for their new business, in fact, in Michigan, there is no such thing as a business license, per se*. In certain industries, the businesses must be licensed, for example home improvement, day care centers, restaurants, etc. You can search online to find out if your industry is one where a license is required. If you encounter a problem finding your industry in this listing, or have any questions, please call the Macomb County SBTDC at 586-469-5118 for assistance.
*Sometimes, a local unit of government within Macomb County may also require that you register your home-based business. They will then issue what they call a business license, but it is only recognized by that locale.
