MACOMB COUNTY CLERK REGISTERS STUDENTS AT THREE HIGH SCHOOLS TO VOTE IN MAY 5TH ELECTION

Macomb County Clerk / Register of Deeds Carmella Sabaugh and staff will be at Stevenson, Utica and Eisenhower High Schools today, Monday, April 6th registering high school students to vote for the May 5, 2009 election.

“In order to vote in an election, a person must first be registered to vote,” said Sabaugh. “My hope is that some day soon Michigan will get real election reform, such as no-reason absentee voting, early voting, and online voter registration.”

The May 5, 2009 election includes School Board elections for Anchor Bay, Armada, Center Line, Chippewa Valley, Clintondale, Fitzgerald, L’Anse Creuse, Mount Clemens, New Haven, Richmond, Roseville, Utica, Van Dyke, Warren Consolidated and Warren Woods schools. There will also be proposals for East Detroit and Utica schools. Full candidate list and proposal language can be found at: http://www.macombcountymi.gov/clerksoffice/ElectionDept.htm.

You may register to vote up to 30 days before an election if you will be at least 18 years old on Election Day, have been a Michigan resident for at least 30 days and are a U.S. citizen. That means if you will be at least 18 on the May 5, 2009 School Election Day you must register to vote on or before April 6, 2009.

Sabaugh will also register students that will be at least 18 on the August 4 Primary Election Day or November 3 General Election Day. Many people are surprised to know that a 17 year-old can register now if he or she will be 18 years old on Election Day.

Sabaugh has made it easy to register to vote. You may request a voter registration form in many different ways, including:

· Internet: Visit Sabaugh’s web site at http://www.macombcountymi.gov/clerksoffice.

· By Phone: Call Sabaugh’s office at (586) 469-5209.

· In Person: Pick up a registration form in person at Sabaugh’s office, which is now open until 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.

A person may also register to vote at any Secretary of State’s office, local clerks’ offices, and certain other government agencies.
