The City of Sterling Heights, located in west-central Macomb County, is the second largest city in the County and fifth largest city in the State. Exploding development from 1950 to 1970 led to the incorporation of the City in 1968. Since 1970, the population has increased over 100 percent! Equally dramatic has been the increase in residential housing units. During the period from 1980 to 2000 available housing stock increased by over thirty-seven percent.
Development in this community is characterized by a well balanced mixture of residential, commercial, recreational and industrial uses. Recreation opportunities include five golf courses, Dodge Park and Freedom Hill County Park. Lakeside Center and the Hall Road area, in the northeast corner of the City, is one of the largest retail areas in the State of Michigan.
