MACOMB COUNTY SEEKS COMMENTS ON EPA BROWNFIELD SURVEY GRANT

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – Macomb County is seeking public comments regarding a proposed grant application to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that would provide for a county-wide survey of brownfield sites.

A brownfield is a site where the presence, or perceived presence, of environmental contamination hampers new use of the property. A copy of the grant application will be available for public review and comment Nov. 3-10 at the Macomb County Department of Planning & Economic Development on the 7th Floor of the county’s Administration building, 1 South Main St., Mount Clemens.

“Redevelopment of brownfields in Macomb County will help to reduce environmental health concerns and blight while creating new jobs, boosting tax revenues and improving the overall quality of life for residents,” said Nancy White, chair of the Macomb County Board of Commissioners.

The county plans to request $200,000 from the EPA to inventory, categorize and assess the extent of environmental contamination on properties throughout Macomb County.

The plan is to focus on abandoned properties and evaluate each for revitalization potential.  Eventually, the county will market these properties for redevelopment purposes to both public and private enterprise.

“Most of these properties are already connected to water, sewage, utilities and roads,” said Stephen Cassin, Macomb County’s executive director of Planning & Economic Development. ”Re-use of abandoned property is a great way to save on infrastructure costs while maximizing existing community services such as police and fire protection.”
