MACOMB COUNTY HOSTS
COUNTYWIDE COMMUNICATIONS SUMMIT

Macomb County, Michigan……History was made today as Chairwoman Nancy M. White and the Macomb County Board of Commissioners hosted the first ever County Communications Summit. Elected and administrative officials from cities, townships and villages across Macomb County attended the event, held at the Macomb Intermediate School District, to discuss what and how technology will be used to improve information sharing between local, county and state governments.
The theme for the summit was: COLLABERATION, UNIFICATION, AND INTEGRATION. Cyntia Zerkowski, Director of the County’s Management Information Services Department provided an overview of the 25-year technology master plan for information sharing calling it “an unheard of planning approach.”
Several other key announcements were also made public, including:
§	“Lighting up” of the County’s information super highway, MACnet, a fiber optic network connecting primary County buildings to all counties, villages and townships that wish to connect together and share information. A myriad of service options was presented to the local communities for their consideration.
§	Introduction of annual development planning meetings, to be hosted by the Macomb County Planning and Economic Development Department. These meetings will bring together utility companies and local communities so they may strategize new development projects and/or road infrastructure projects that will enable using underground conduit as a cost-viable option. This futuristic way of doing business is a direct outcome of the LinkMacomb Planning Project, funded by the State’s Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC).

§         Activation of the Geographical Inspection System (GIS) for use by all government community planners on MACnet beginning in 2005.

Communities were asked to appoint a “MACnet liaison” to work with the County’s Management Information Services Department in outlining what services are of interest, developing strategic plans to meet those interests, and to develop a cost sharing model.

Nancy White, Chairwoman of the Macomb County Board of Commissioners, said the Communication Summit was planned as a result of a series of Mayors’ Forums she initiated in 2003.  “Communications were frequently raised as an issue of both interest and concern by our local elected officials.  I think today’s Summit provided them with a forum in which some very viable options and exciting new initiatives were made available to them.”  White further stated, “I am pleased that our MIS department is leading the way with a long-term vision for information sharing.”
