Board of Commissioners Chair,
Paul Gieleghem with a gift given by visitors from China
The department participated in an initiative led by the Detroit Chinese Business Association designed to foster relationship building between our region and Xiangtan, China. Located within the central part of the Hunan province along the Xiangjiang River, Xiangtan has been recognized as an important commercial center since ancient times. As early as the 17th Century, the area is renowned for its rice markets and growth of medicinal herbs. Today, the area is known for its growing industrial base.
The purpose of the visit was to develop business opportunities between Xiangtan and Michigan. Cao Jiongfang, Vice Mayor of Xiangtan, led the delegation of 22 individuals representing government and business. The group arrived on Sunday, March 22 and was treated to a lively welcoming meal at a local Irish pub attended by government officials.
On Monday morning, they toured the Ford Motor Company Rouge Plant and spent the afternoon getting to know one another at an information exchange.
Tuesday was Macomb County day. Arrangements included a tour of the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, a scenic tour of the county, lunch at Stony Creek Metro Park and then a tour of TRW in Washington Township.
