The moment that Macomb has been looking forward to is drawing nearer. Since Michigan State University first announced that it was planning to expand its educational reach through the establishment of a site for its College of Osteopathic Medicine, officials from the Macomb County Department of Planning & Economic Development have been working with those from Macomb Community College and MSU to welcome medical students to Macomb County.
MSU’s osteopathic program is one of only 24 in the nation and is consistently ranked among the top ten of all medical schools for their focus on primary care.
In all, MSUCOM will accept 300 students for the 2009 class. A total of 50 of those will be placed at the Macomb Community College’s University Center. According to MSU, applications for acceptance are up ten percent over last year.
Dr. William Strampel, dean of MSUCOM, is extremely pleased with the Macomb location and the support that MSU has received. “As we work toward our initial goal of enrolling 50 members of our entering class at Macomb University Center in June, we appreciate more and more that we are locating at an innovative, state-of-the-art educational institution. With its responsive government and community leadership, and high concentration of osteopathic physicians and partner hospitals, Macomb County has been extraordinarily hospitable to our college.”
Classes will be temporarily housed within the University Center near M-59 and Garfield while construction on a 21,000-square-foot addition is completed.
