economic development in action

Graphics East, Inc., a full-service printing company, is consolidating its operations into a single, 23,000 square foot building in Roseville. A more diverse and expanding customer base has made it necessary for the company to purchase a larger printing press and related equipment. According to Mike Easthope, founder and president, “At one time, more than 60 percent of our business was tied to the automobile industry. Today, only 10 percent of the jobs we produce are auto related.”
The Macomb County Department of Planning and Economic Development assisted Graphics East in securing from the City of Roseville a tax abatement for new machinery and equipment. The company is investing more than $3 million for a state-of-the-art, six-color printing press that is anticipated to increase productivity by a whopping 70 percent. Up to 10 new jobs will be created as a result of the investment.
Graphics East offers a full range of services including pre-press, printing, bindery and finishing, delivery and mailing. The company has been serving southeast Michigan and beyond for the past 30 years. Today’s mix of customers includes banking and finance, higher education, construction and direct mail as well as automotive.
This project exemplifies solid economic development in action. By purchasing and occupying a building that has been vacant for more than two years, the company will bring new revenue to the city through taxes on the building and existing equipment. Moving into the larger facility also accommodates the business’s ability to grow and provides for improved operating efficiency. Together, these factors help to make Graphics East more competitive, allows them to retain jobs, and serves to create new employment opportunities in the community.
