George George Park

Multi-use redevelopment reshapes a former golf course!

A new development stands in place of a spot that was once renowned for its dogleg lefts and glitzy formal events.

The former Moravian Hills Golf Course and Hillcrest County Club occupied a large tract of land between Moravian and Groesbeck Roads, just south of Cass in Clinton Township and north of the Clinton River for more than five decades.  A Macomb County institution, it was a local favorite for hitting the links or hosting a formal gala.  Today, the property is home to a major retail and commercial center, a spectacular public park, a wetland mitigation area and new single-family condominium housing complex.

The most visible redevelopment is the brand-new Meijer store on Groesbeck which also offers a Tim Horton’s, Flagstar Bank and Fifth Third Bank.

The newly opened George George Memorial Park is a glorious public place that integrated many of the assets of the property’s former life with new architectural accents.  The park features two impressive (and environmentally sound) water fountains, a walking trail, picnic pavilion with public restrooms and two distinct playscapes.  George George Park is definitely an impressive destination.

Adjacent to the park a large flat river floodplain area has been designated for use as a wetland mitigation area.  This area includes parts of the former golf cart pathway and bridges that now meander through four varying wetland uses.  They will eventually include a Wet Meadow Wetland, a Scrub/Shrub Wetland, a Forested Wetland, and finally an Emergent Wetland.  This will allow developers the right to implement other wetlands that were removed from nearby sites within the watershed.

Finally, the property is also home to “Hillcrest on the Park,” a luxury condominium development offered 178 homes being developed by Arteva Homes.  Designed to be a pedestrian friendly area, the condos are available with six different floor plans, many of which offer walkout basements overlooking the new park and the Clinton River.  Prices begin in the low $190’s and through the mid $200’s and, despite the current economic climate, are moving quickly.
