A new exploratory group has formed to investigate the possibility of developing a hands-on children’s museum here in Macomb County. Based on the knowledge that early childhood learning is a critical phase in the overall development of a child’s intellectual ability, the group believes that a museum that caters to the crowd age 0-10 would help to boost educational attainment levels as well as provide a new tourism destination in the county.
The initiative is being spearheaded by Monika Rittner, a Financial Advisor with Merrill Lynch. Rittner was recently honored by the Festival of Races for her efforts as a volunteer to launch this first-time ever event.
“Research indicates that early childhood learning is vitally important to the overall development of children,” says Rittner. “A museum focused on science, technology and interactive learning would be an asset to both Macomb County and the region.”
If attendance numbers at other children’s museums are an indicator, she may be right.
According to the most recent annual report published by the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum, an average of 220,000 people visit their 40,000 square foot facility annually. More than 60 percent of visitors are from outside of Ann Arbor and represent some 57 countries!
The group is currently working to raise $40,000 for a feasibility study to determine whether Macomb County could support such an endeavor. The study will also provide sustainability recommendations.
The “First Forty” campaign asks that community leaders and businesses consider giving $1,000 or more to fund the study. The group is more than halfway to their goal including contributions from Petitpren Inc., Mount Clemens Rotary Foundation, Mount Clemens Lions Club, and Gebran Anton.
