Department makes summer dreams come true

On June 8, the Macomb County Department of Planning & Economic Development hosted a “Send a Girl Scout to summer camp” luncheon and silent auction.  The event, supported by guests from other departments including the Treasurer’s Office, Board of Commissioners and Facilities & Operations managed to raise $600 in an hour - enough to send three girls to a week of camp this summer!

After reading about “Summer Dreams,” a Detroit Free Press initiative to support organizations that provide camp experiences for kids from throughout metro Detroit, Denise Mentzer, a business counselor aide with the department, decided to take action.  A former Girl Scout, she especially wanted to support their program.

With the generous support of executive director Steve Cassin, Denise rallied staff to get involved.  Many brought wonderful salads and scrumptious desserts while others contributed items for the silent auction.  Sharing a meal together for a good cause as well as spirited bidding on the 31 unique items made for a good time had by all.

Best of all, all proceeds will go directly to the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan to support summer camp.
