Is honey safe for babies?
No, honey contains spores which may be dangerous to children under two. The natural spores found in honey are known to cause infant botulism. Pacifiers should not be dipped in honey, and honey should not be added to food, water or formula that is fed to infants. Processed foods containing honey should also not be given to children under two What is the best juice for infants and toddlers? Apple or grape juice. Juice can be diluted with water. Orange juice should not be given to infants under one year since the acid can upset their tummy. Which milk is appropriate for a one year old: whole, 2%, 1%, chocolate, or skim? Babies should continue to drink formula or breast milk until they reach the age of one. Whole milk should be given until the child reaches two, and then toddlers can drink 2%, 1%, or skim milk. How much should my toddler eat? Children 1-5 years old usually need the least number of servings on the Food Guide Pyramid. Offer a variety of foods to children and smaller portions. Which is better: breast milk or infant formula? Breast milk is recommended since it contains more essential nutrients, promotes bonding between mother and child and can also protect the baby from infection. However, infant formula is an acceptable alternative to breast milk. Infant formulas are available in three forms: ready-to-feed, concentrated liquid, and powder. What are some alternative sources to calcium if my child does not like milk? Broccoli, kelp, spinach, soft bones in canned fish (such as salmon and sardines) Do children need fiber? What is fiber? And what are some good sources of fiber? Yes, children need fiber. Fiber is the structural part of plant foods that we cannot digest. Only food from plants have fiber. There are two types of fiber: insoluble, which acts as a sweep in the digestive system, and soluble, which helps lower cholesterol and stabilize blood sugar. Will sugar or caffeine contribute to hyperactive children? These are two different ingredients, both of which are commonly found in products such as soft drinks. Sugar will not contribute to hyperactivity in children but will add empty calories that may cause dental caries or obesity. (Michigan children are heavier than national norms. For example, our 14 year-olds are about 7 pounds heavier than the national average.) Caffeine, a central nervous system stimulant, will contribute to wakefulness, irritability, and mood swings. Children will be affected by smaller amounts than adults will. More than 250 milligrams (mg) per day is considered excessive. Mountain Dew (12 oz) contains 55 mg of caffeine; Coffee (6 oz) contains 103 mg of caffeine. What if my child will not sit down to eat? Children need a calm mealtime just as much as you do. Planning a 5-10 minute quiet period before meals allows child to wind down. Join your children at the table for meals and make it a family affair. |
