How do I take a soil sample and what will it tell me?

For a charge (plus shipping) you can get the standard soil test which includes determination of soil pH, available phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium levels as well as recommendations for lime and fertilizer. Other supplemental soil tests are available at an additional cost. The soil is not tested for toxins or pathogens. Using a clean bucket, sample in a zigzag fashion throughout the area in 10-15 different locations, 3-8 inches deep, then combine them into a two-three cup sample. The mix provides a composite of the area.

Bring soil in any type of container to Macomb MSU Extension office and you will get the results back in approximately 3 weeks.  See Directions to Office for map information.
