Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Green Schools Program?
A grassroots initiative at Hartland High School in Livingston County led to the formal establishment of the Michigan Green Schools Program when Gov. Jennifer Granholm signed Public Act 146 into law on May 22, 2006.

The program is focused on encouraging public and private schools to teach students about energy savings and environmentally friendly actions. A list of criteria suggests activities and programs in which schools may participate. Schools that complete at least 10 of the activities during an academic year may apply to their county program coordinators to become an official Michigan Green School.

New for the 2009-10 year: schools may participate in an expanded list of activities to achieve a higher designation of “Emerald” or “Evergreen.”

The Macomb County Board of Commissioners encourages all public and private schools in the county to participate in the Michigan Green Schools Program, because saving energy and protecting Michigan’s natural resources is in everyone’s best interest.

Does it cost anything to become a Green School?
It does not cost anything to apply for Green School status. The only costs are those a school may incur while participating in activities to meet points or objectives.

Who is eligible to apply?
Any public or private K-12 school in Macomb County may apply.

How do I apply?
Please click "How to Apply” for details. Remember to submit application and supporting materials no later than March 1, 2010.

Is the Macomb County program different from the Michigan Green Schools programs in other counties?
All counties participating in the Michigan Green Schools Program adhere to the same basic principles of the state law. However, each county has a different application and may have additional enhancements to the program. Schools must apply to their county using their county’s application.

Where can we find an environmental speaker?
Please contact a Green Schools coordinator if you need assistance in finding a list of environmental speakers for your school.
