The "GREAT AMERICAN SMOKE-OUT" falls on the third Thursday in November every year. The American Cancer Society has created this nationally recognized day to ask smokers to put down their cigarettes, cigars, spit tobacco, or any tobacco product for one day. No behavior is changed without great effort. But, as it becomes easier day after day, the health rewards become greater - day after day. The end results of a longer, healthier life are certainly worth the initial discomfort. Quitting smoking is a process - it often takes a few tries for it to "stick." MILLIONS OF FORMER SMOKERS WERE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS BATTLE AND YOU CAN JOIN THEIR RANKS.

The American Cancer Society states that an estimated 47 million adults in the United States currently smoke, and approximately half will die prematurely from smoking. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for men and women, and this year alone there will be about 189,500 new cases diagnosed in the U.S. More than 80% of lung cancers are thought to result from smoking.

To increase your success in kicking the habit permanently, smokers are encouraged to have some means of support, such as nicotine replacement therapy, counseling guide books, and the encouragement of friends and family members. The American Cancer Society provides help for people who want to quit smoking at 1-800-ACS-2345 or visit their web site at www.cancer.org.

You can quit. CHOOSING TO TAKE THE FIRST STEP is often the hardest part. Be a winner - don't let your life go up in smoke.
