The goal of School Immunization Program is to lower the risk of vaccine preventable disease in learning environments. The Program provides support and consultation to local private and public schools, nursery schools, preschools, childcare centers and Head Start Programs to achieve and maintain an immunization rate of 95% or higher in students and enrollees. The school, preschool, childcare center and Head Start Program staff review the immunization records of approximately 50,000 children and students each year and send reports to the School Immunization Program at the Macomb County Health Department as required by law. |
| Statewide Vaccine Shortages Affecting School and/or Child Care Program Immunization Requirements |
On December 19, 2007 the Centers for Disease Control issued interim guidelines for Haemophilus influenzae (Hib) vaccine due to a vaccine shortage. The booster (last) dose for children 15-59 months of age in child care programs is deferred unless the child meets high-risk criteria. Child care programs include child care centers, nursery schools, preschools, and Head Start programs. Because of the shortage, the Michigan Department of Community Health again suspended all Hib vaccine requirements for the upcoming October 2009 and April 2010 reporting periods for children who attend childcare programs. During this time, medical providers are asked to continue to immunize children according to shortage guidelines. Child Care Program staff need to continure to update and report and Hib vaccine doses given, so that a child's immunization status will be accurately reflected in their immunization record.
