Pandemic Influenza

Potential Effects of a Flu Pandemic

Medical

health care providerDuring a flu pandemic, illness could be widespread.  It is estimated that as many as 30% of the population will be infected in a flu pandemic.  Symptoms may be more severe as compared to seasonal flu symptoms.  It is likely that more than one wave of an outbreak will occur.  The second outbreak could cause illness for many who were unaffected by the first wave.   Medical facilities, hospitals and services could be overwhelmed.  The majority of people with pandemic flu will be treated at home.  Communities may not be able to count on neighboring communities for help, since they may be dealing with outbreaks also.

Social

In the event of a flu pandemic, the government may restrict or close down facilities involving large groups of people closed facilities(examples... schools, sporting or community events, churches).  If large numbers of people are sick at the same time, many public services could be disrupted, such as...

  • transportation
  • communications
  • schools
  • banks, stores or restaurants
  • utilities
  • medical care
  • police and fire department

Government and other public health officials may use various methods, such as quarantine and isolation, to attempt to slow the spread of a flu pandemic.  Quarantine is separating people who have been exposed to pandemic flu until it is proven they are not infected. This can take place in a home or medical facility.  Isolation is separating people who have pandemic flu from those who do not.  This helps prevent them from spreading the flu. They will get medical care while in isolation.  This may take place in their home or in a medical facility.

There could also be travel restrictions designed to slow or stop the spread of the flu.  Travelers may be screened for pandemic flu when returning home from abroad.

A severe flu pandemic can cause significant emotional stress.  Fears of illness, financial hardships or the loss of loved ones can be very stressful.  Find support among your family and friends.  News of a flu pandemic may be overwhelming and scary to children.  Make sure children know the facts and keep the message appropriate for their age groups.  Reassure them and help them feel safe.

Economic

It is estimated that a flu pandemic could have a total cost in the billions of dollars and affect all aspects of the global economy.  Business and industry need to plan for potential large numbers of worker absences.  Individuals need to plan for potential pay losses if their employer is closed for an extended period of time.

Thinking and planning for a flu pandemic can provoke fear.  We can take steps to minimize the disruptions a flu pandemic may cause.

Be prepared, not scared!
