Macomb County Executive

Mark A. Hackel
Macomb County Executive

Executive Mark A. HackelBorn and raised in Macomb County, Mark A. Hackel is a proud graduate of Warren Consolidated Schools, where he never missed a day of classes. He literally worked his way through college, earning an associate’s degree from Macomb Community College, a bachelor’s degree from Wayne State University and a master’s in public administration from Central Michigan University.

Mr. Hackel’s leadership skills were recognized early in life when he was made captain of the school safety squad in the 6th grade and later captain of the wrestling team in high school. His career in law enforcement began in 1981 as a dispatcher with the Macomb County Sheriff’s Department. Over the next 20 years he worked his way through every rank and was ultimately elected sheriff in 2000. As sheriff, he was recognized for his innovative law enforcement practices and his fiscal discipline. During his decade-long watch, the department operated at a surplus every year. His professional credentials include attending the F.B.I. National Academy and the U.S. Secret Service Dignitary Protection School. He also participated in exchange programs with the Jewish Institute for National Security, the London Police Force, and was invited to speak about law enforcement with officials in the Ukraine.

Mr. Hackel was elected to serve as Macomb’s first-ever county executive in November 2010, finishing first in every voting precinct in the county. He ran on a platform of making County government more efficient and effective, and promised to be accountable, accessible, and a passionate advocate for Macomb. Since taking office on January 1, he has demonstrated that he is “walking the talk.”

During his first eight months in office, he has enacted organizational changes and authored budgetary amendments that improved the County’s bottom line by nearly $7 million. He met his goal of making government more accountable and transparent by putting financial information in a comprehensive and user-friendly format on the county’s website – becoming the first Michigan county to do so. As county executive, he is laser-focused on both economic and community development. He has actively promoted the county’s strong automotive and advanced manufacturing capacity and has showcased the county’s position as the Defense Capital of the Midwest. He recently unveiled his “New Blue Economy Initiative,” which supports clean water, tourism, recreation and economic development on Lake St. Clair and the Clinton River.

Mr. Hackel is a forceful advocate for Macomb County on key regional issues and has been an effective voice with Macomb’s elected delegation in Lansing and Washington D.C. He is committed to providing innovative leadership for the region while delivering services citizens and businesses expect.

As a member of the Big Brother Big Sister Detroit Board of Directors, he enjoys mentoring and empowering children to succeed. He is an adjunct professor at Macomb Community College and Wayne State University. Mark currently resides in Macomb Township and hosts his own local cable show called “Executive Focus.”
