Event:

Sunday, November 1, 1 p.m.: Children’s etiquette class and cookie tea

On Monday, November 16th, the Greater Clinton Historical Society will present Nick Sinacori with his insightful program on the Fairview neighborhood on the East Side of Detroit. Fairview is a city that once sat between Detroit and Grosse Pointe Park, right on the river. It was incorporated and annexed so quickly that even longtime East Side residents have never heard of it, but from 1903 to 1907, Fairview was a legitimate municipality. Fairview's borders were Bewick to the west, Cadieux to the east, Mack to the north and the Detroit River on the south. Nick is one of the founders of the Village of Fairview Historical Society, and has fascinating, long-lost information to share! So all you East Siders who grew up in the neighborhood on Garland, Bewick, St. Clair, Marlborough, or Newport – this presentation is for you! This presentation will be held at the Clinton-Macomb Public Library Auditorium, Romeo Plank and Canal Roads, in Clinton Township, from 7-9pm. No registration is required, the presentations are free, and there will be light refreshments served. For a preview of Nick’s presentation, go to:  http://www.modeldmedia.com/features/fairview17008.aspx

Sunday, November 22-Open house

The Greater Clinton Township Historical Society proudly presents Nick Sinacori and his insightful program on the
Fairview neighborhood on the East Side of Detroit.  The program will be presented on Monday, November 16th, at 7:00p, at the Main Branch of the Clinton-Macomb Public Library, Romeo Plank and Canal Roads, in Clinton Township.

Fairview is a city that once sat right on the river between Detroit and Grosse Pointe Park. It was incorporated and annexed so
quickly that even longtime East Side residents have never heard of it, but from 1903 to 1907, Fairview was a legitimate municipality. Fairview's borders were Bewick to the west, Cadieux to the east, Mack to the north and the Detroit River on the south. Nick is one of the founders of the Village of Fairview Historical Society, and has fascinating, long-lost information to
share. There will also be a General Membership Meeting and Annual Election of Board of Trustees. The presentation will be held in the Auditorium of the Library. No registration is required, the presentation is free, and there will be light refreshments served.

On Sunday, November 22, 2009, at 1:30 p.m., the Greater Washington Area Historical Society will present a historic date plaque to Jim and Jean Holcomb for their home located at 3603 28 Mile Road (west of Mound Road).

This "other octagon house" in Washington Township is a wooden structure built in 1843 by Wells Burt, one of William Austin Burt's 5 sons.   John S. Burt (a descendant) wrote a book in 1985 about his ancestors, "They Left Their Mark, William Austin Burt and His Sons, Surveyors of the Public Domain".   According to John S. Burt, from 1844 to 1846, William Austin Burt (a state historic marker about his life is in Stoney Creek Park) and three of his sons (Austin, Wells, and William) moved their families into new homes they had built in Mt. Vernon, a village within Washington Township.  Later known as the "Burt
chalets", they were described as "easily distinguished by their unusual character and design.”

The presentation will take place at the Washington Historical Museum, 58230 Van Dyke, north of 26 Mile Road. Refreshments will be served.  All are welcome. This is also the last "open house" day at the museum (from 1 to 4 p.m.)
for 2009. For more information, call (586) 781-2963.

The Ray Township Historical Society (RTHS) will host its monthly meeting on Monday, November 16, at 7:00 p.m., at the Ray Township Senior Center. Light refreshments will be served.

The evening’s program will include a presentation by Judy Lopus titled “The Early Settlers in Ray Township”.  Included in the discussion will be the Gass family. John and Rebecca (McGregor) Gass and thirteen of their fourteen children moved to Michigan from New York and lived on farms in Ray Township within three miles of each other. As many as 250 descendants gathered for Gass Family Reunions since 1850 in family homes, the Davis Hotel, and the Davis General Store.

RTHS 2010 Calendars supporting the ongoing restoration of the historic 1827 Lee Cemetery on Indian Trail will be available for purchase for $10.00 each at the meeting.  The calendars are also available at the Ray Township Hall & Library, Daytona's,
Jarvis Accounting, KO Music, Mobil Express, Octagon House, Ray Center Market, and Vince & Joe's (on Romeo Plank).

For more information visit the RTHS website www.rayhistory.org or telephone Terry Goike at (586) 784-9221.
