Macomb County Historical Commission
Our mission is to procure, protect, preserve, and promote the historical resources and legacy of Macomb County, Michigan.
2008 Heritage Alliance Conference
The Macomb County historical commissions, societies, and groups held their annual conference on
April 12, 2008 at the Macomb Cultural Center on the campus of Macomb County Community College.
With over 20 different historical groups represented, the conference was well attended and a
great deal of historical information was exchanged and received! Macomb County is an area that
appreciates its history, with virtually every area of our large county covered by a group that values
its history. The pictures on this page are from the Heritage Alliance.

There will be, as usual, a number of events of a historical nature coming up. Spring and summer are
exceptional times to hold historical events. With the economy of Michigan down, it is timely to note
that historical events are a great outing for the whole family, are usually free, and allows an educational
opportunity to learn about the local history. For a list of upcoming events, click on the Upcoming
Local Events link on this page. All events are free unless otherwise noted!

Historical re-enactor Michael Deren entertained Heritage Alliance attendees and others
with his show on Civil War music. Instruments included fife, bugle, concertina and
saxhorn.

Congratulations to Karl Mark Pall, the 2007 winner of this year’s Alexander Macomb Award. The organization winner was Selfridge Air National Guard Base. The Alexander Macomb Awards are announced each year at the Joint Service Luncheon before the Bath City Festival. This year’s luncheon will be on August 28.
The theme for the Historical Commission's Activity Books this year will be schoolhouses. There are also still a few activity books left from previous years. The book features a photo/essay contest for fourth-grade classes or groups. The contest requires participants to visit sites mentioned in the book, photograph them and write a short essay about their experiences. The first-place winner gets a certificate of recognition and a pizza party for his fourth-grade class or group. The second-place winner gets a certificate of recognition. Contact the Historical Commission at macombhistory@yahoo.com if you are interested in a copy for yourself, or if an instructor, for your class, or fill out and mail the order form at the bottom of the page.

Future plans for the historical commission's portion of Macomb County's website include a listing of historical speakers and a blog dedicated to local history. For submissions, please e-mail macombhistory@yahoo.com.
Therefore, 2008 promises to be an exciting and busy year for the historic commissions and historical societies of Macomb County. If you aren't a member or participant in this exciting period of identifying and preserving the rich history of Macomb County, you should consider going to this list and picking out your local historical entity. You need not be a member of the community to join their society. For instance, train lovers from Fraser can join Save Our Depot in New Haven, who have saved and renovated their village depot, still in its original location! (This depot, as were most of Macomb counties' surviving depots, was a frequent stop of Thomas Edison's.) Most communities have an historical organization, to find yours, click on this link:
