Longtime Commissioner Phil DiMaria was re-elected in November 2010 to serve his 10th term on the Board of Commissioners. DiMaria represent the residents of District 3, which includes Eastpointe and Warren.
DiMaria, a Democrat, has served as chairman of the Justice & Public Safety Committee for more than a decade, and chaired an ad hoc committee on the homeless. He is a past member of the Macomb County Planning Commission, and the Michigan Association of Counties’ Justice and Public Safety Committee.
He has championed law enforcement and public safety during his years on the board, and focuses on the needs of the large population of senior citizens in his district. He conducts outreach programs and sponsors senior citizen luncheons each year to gather information on the needs of seniors and explain county programs available to them.
DiMaria is a retired Troy police officer, leaving the force in 2004 after serving 30 years. He received many awards and commendations as a police officer. In addition, he was honored as Eastpointe Citizen of the Year and received a distinguished service award from East Detroit Public Schools.
He is a member of the Eastpointe Oddfellows and Knights of Columbus Lakeshore Council. His extensive record of community involvement includes service as chairman of the East Detroit Michigan Week activities and the East Detroit Protective Services Commission. He is a past member of the East Detroit Traffic Safety Commission, former president of the Nine Mile & Toepfer Homeowners Association, and former secretary of the Eight Mile & Kelly Homeowners Association. He also sponsored scholarship and youth sports programs in the East Detroit Public Schools for many years.
DiMaria participates in the county Adopt-a-Road program twice a year, cleaning 10 Mile Road from Gratiot Avenue to Kelly Road, and Beaconsfield from Nine Mile Road to Eight Mile Road.
In June 2008, DiMaria was elected to chair of the board of directors for the charity group Wigs4Kids. This group accepts donated hair that is turned into wigs for children who have lost their own hair due to illness such as cancer.
DiMaria graduated from the Macomb County Police Academy and is a graduate of Notre Dame High School in Harper Woods.
He and his wife Roseanne live in Eastpointe. They have two daughters and two grandchildren.
