2007 Non-Residential Investment Remains Strong!

While we are all aware that the pace of new housing construction in the region has slowed considerably over the past several years, non-residential development in Macomb County remains strong.

The list of 2007 Non-Residential Development Projects, compiled by department staff with the assistance of local municipalities*, reveals that there were a total of 161 new and renovated construction projects completed or underway in the county during the past year.

Leading the list with a total of 88 projects were Commercial Developments. Included were a brand-new service station in Armada, the new Waterside Marketplace in Chesterfield Township and the renovation of a former department store on 8 Mile Road and Gratiot in Eastpointe.

Overall, there were 30 Industrial Developments in the county during 2007.  These include the addition of a sixth building to the Danview Technology Park in Shelby Township and Faurecia North America’s addition of new research space to their campus in Fraser.

While housing starts may be down over previous years, the county’s population continues to grow.  As “baby boomers” age, demands specific to this group have increased. For instance, 22 new projects involving Medical and Office Space were completed in 2007.  An additional 18 Institutional and Municipal Projects including schools, parking lots, and water system treatment centers round out the list of projects.

* Every effort was made to gather comprehensive information for each local unit of government within the county.  If you are aware of a 2007 project that was omitted, please contact Camille Silda of the department’s Economic Development Services Group at 586-469-5285.
