Expanded beach open!

At the “T” intersection of Washington Street and Front Street in the heart of City of New Baltimore is one of the most breathtaking sites in all of Macomb County.   Nestled on the banks of Lake St. Clair, Walter and Mary Burke Park is an amazing recreational amenity that highlights the natural beauty of Macomb County and how the strategic development of a dedicated community can have far-reaching benefits.

In the midst of rebirth, both physically and economically, the City of New Baltimore is undertaking a series of park improvement initiatives that highlight the true beauty and opportunity of the area.  One of the cornerstones of the project is the expansion of the public beach located on the north side of the 5.3-acre park.

The new beach is larger and features expanded lifeguard stations.  A proposed six-foot barrier free walkway with decorative brick inserts will make a stroll along the shoreline accessible to all.  Burke Park also a playground, picnic tables, grills, indoor pavilion and comfort station.  The new beach will officially open on June 20 to coincide with a planned “Movie in the Park” event.

The entire project was planned and funded by city.  Also on the planning block is the completion of a feasibility analysis to study the possibility of developing a harbor within the park that would offer public boat slips, docks and a splash zone.

Says Judy Sproat, Director of Planning and Economic Development, “We are fortunate to be located on such a beautiful body of water.  Obviously, our efforts to make this amazing and unique park an inviting and welcoming environment not only increases the quality of life for our residents but also for those who visit us.”
