The Macomb County Department of Planning & Economic Development has received two Neighborhood Stabilization Grants from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development. The first, NSP-1, for almost $9.8 million, is largely complete, although a few housing opportunities remain for very-low-income households in the Cities of Center Line, Eastpointe, and Mt. Clemens. Qualified and interested candidates may obtain information from the developers:
Upon completion, NSP-1 will have caused the acquisition and resale of 57 foreclosed homes, the refurbishing and expansion of two municipal parks, the demolition of 25 vacant, blighted homes and one school, the reconstruction of a street, installation of upgraded and decorative light fixtures in a business district, and the conversion of a vacant office building for educational use. These projects will stabilize and even transform neighborhoods.
The second, NSP-3, for just over $2.5 m, will support the conversion of the former Oakwood Middle School (acquired with NSP-1 funding) in the City of Eastpointe into 44 units of rental housing affordable to very-low-income seniors. That project also involves private and Federal low-income housing tax credit financing. Implementation will not begin until the tax credits have been approved.
