4-H Environment

 

Youth have fun exploring their environment and the natural world. Programs focus on teaching environmental responsibility and stewardship. This 4-H program area provides educational opportunities for youth to enjoy the outdoors and learn about the interconnection of people and nature.

Macomb County 4-H Youth Conservation Council: Are you interested in protecting your local environment? Would you like to learn more about environmental issues? Do you enjoy being part of a team? Would you like to develop your leadership skills? Want your voice to be heard by local officials? If you answered yes to any of these questions you may want to join this group of youth.

Events and Training

4-H Environmental & Outdoor Education Volunteer Workshop

March – Kettunen Center
Gain ideas, project resources and activities to help kids enjoy the outdoors and care for the environment. Sample a variety of interest areas within the 4-H environmental and outdoor education (EOE) program to share with your 4-H club or group. Sessions will feature GPS, wildlife, environmental stewardship, water testing, fisheries, outdoor adventure challenge recreation and leadership, energy, and forestry. Open to adult and teen volunteers aged 13 and up.

4-H Great Lakes and Natural Resource Camp: 4-H Great Lakes & Natural Resources Camp is an annual MSU pre-college program held in late July or early August on the northern shores of Lake Huron in Presque Isle, Michigan.

4-H Shooting Sports Instructor Workshop
April – Kettunen Center

Choose one of several disciplines offered at this workshop as a first step in becoming certified as a Michigan 4-H shooting sports instructor. Disciplines offered will include riflery, shotgun, archery, hunting and wildlife. Join us and see all that the 4-H shooting sports program has to offer! Shooting sports instructors seeking recertification in a discipline should fill out a recertification application. You do NOT need to retake the training unless you’ve been inactive for more than 3 years. Open to new and veteran adult volunteers and youth aged 16 and up.

Michigan 4-H State Shooting Sports Tournament
This tournament provides Michigan 4-H shooters the opportunity to test their skills against other youth from all over the state and compete for awards in BB Gun, Trap, Skeet Muzzle loading, Air Rifle Target Archery and 3-D Archery. This event takes place annually in late July or early August. Participants must participate in a local competitive activity in order to qualify for participation in the State 4-H Shooting Sports Tournament.

Starting and Sustaining a School Garden Worskhop
This workshop is designed for teachers and other school garden facilitators interested in alternative teaching tools.  Participants will learn the steps to designing, building, and maintaining a school garden.  From gardening basics to building a garden team and trying out classroom lessons and activities, this workshop is designed for educators interested in hands-on teaching tools.  Learn how to engage your students in the outdoor classroom or choose to bring the concepts indoors.  For information on this or other outdoor science education programs, contact Alan Jaros at jaros@msu.edu or 248-858-1524.

Junior Citizen Planner: is an innovative, youth land use education program to develop responsible and involved citizens by educating youth through fun, hands-on learning activities within their communities on land use issues.

Outdoor Education Skills Clinic

This program is designed to provide aquatic education, promote ethical angling, develop fishing skills and introduce youth to the sport of archery.  This experience takes place at Pocket Park, an outdoor educational facility located within the Michigan State Fairgrounds.  Fishing education includes fish biology, fish habitat, equipment, ethics and angling skills development.  Archery education includes safety, equipment, technique, concentration and self-improvement.
