4-H Youth Gardening

Committee

The Horticulture and Environmental Education Committee has been inactive for the last few years. Should a renewed interest in activities that would fall under its scope develop, the committee could be reactivated.

Events and Training

  • 4-H Plant Science and Entomology Workshop
Held in March each year – Kettunen Center
This workshop offers a variety of plant and insect related activities. This is a very hands-on opportunity to explore many horticulture and entomology projects through games, crafts, science applications and career exploration. Open to adults and teens aged 13 and up. Click for class schedules at the Kettenun Center.
  • Let’s Get Growing: Gardening with Kids -- MSUE
Four evenings beginning at the end of February through the month of March.. Fee $50.
The target audience for this 4-week training are elementary and middle school teachers, other youth programming staff (4-H Clubs, Scouts, YMCAs, Parks and Recreation programs, Community Centers, etc.) and their adult volunteers. Topics covered include plants and plant parts, seeds and germination, insects and diseases, and soil and water. Participants will learn about successful teaching techniques and program administration pointers, will receive a variety of youth gardening curricula, hands-on lessons, and information on website, print, and video resources, and will have the opportunity to connect with an existing youth gardening program.  This program is offered annually each winter by the Extension 4-H and Horticulture Departments. Master Gardeners can receive credit for instructional hours and educators can receive 1.4 SB-CEUs. For more information, call 586-469-6431.
