Manufacturing Day

High school students from across Macomb County will learn more about careers in manufacturing thanks to the efforts of a group of manufacturers, educators and economic developers.  Motivated by a desire to expose young people to the interesting and well-paying jobs offered by the industry, the group is looking for additional manufacturers to get involved in hosting tours on October 3, 2014.

Manufacturing Day (MFG Day) is a national campaign designed to increase awareness about the important role of manufacturing in our economy while dispelling a misperception that manufacturing is dirty, dangerous and low paying.  Ultimately, the campaign hopes to reduce the skilled labor shortage by connecting with the next generation of employees.

The national campaign is spearheaded by several organizations including the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, National Association of Manufacturers, Manufacturing Extension Partnership, and others.

Last year, Macomb County was one of only a few registered MFG Day events in Michigan.  While the day was a success, it was missing a critical element:  students!

Staff from the Macomb County Department of Planning and Economic Development and the Macomb Intermediate School District joined forces to assemble a committee together.  It includes executives from area manufacturers, school districts and economic development agencies.  The goal is for 1,200 students from every public school district in the county to participate.

We hope to accomplish this by providing opportunities for students from all 28 of Macomb County's public high schools to tour area manufacturers on October 3, 2014. We are currently looking for manufacturing companies to welcome groups of chaperoned students.  Our intent is for them to see the "product life cycle" in action as they meet the people involved in the important work of making things.

If you are interested in getting involved, please complete this quick questionnaire: Apply to be a host facility
