"Building a Brighter Tomorrow"
As the county experiences rapid growth, planning at all levels of government becomes more important, and more complicated. The old model of dealing with planning issues solely within each municipality's borders can no longer address issues that are regional in scope. The planning and environmental service area strives to reach across municipal boundaries to address common issues that impact all jurisdictions. The service area does not take the place of sound local planning but is there to enhance and foster coordination between communities. With each successful collaborative project the service area moves closer to putting all the pieces of the puzzle together.
The program area provides a wide range of education, coordination and other services, such as:
Floodplain Maps (FEMA DFIRM's) - Learn more about FEMA's updated Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRM's). Find answers to frequently asked questions on floodplains, the 100 year floodplain, FEMA map updates, and flood insurance.
Demographics - The public has access to a wealth of census information, SEMCOG data, reports, and datasets for Macomb County and its municipalities. Information requests can be made in person, in writing or over the phone.
Environment - Our deparmtent is involved with many environmental intiatives: watershed planning and protection, environmetnal ordinances, coastal zone management, brownfield redevelopment, solid waste management, SE Michigan Resource Conservation & Development Council, etc.
Ongoing Projects - Staff are involved in many ongoing projects that are in various stages of development and others that require long term assistance. Examples include Cool Cities intiatives, brownfield redevelopment, downtown and corridor revitalization, planning support for local municipalities, non-motorized trail development, etc.
Trails - The Department is actively involved in the planning and development of pedestrian trails and connectors throughout the County.
Master Plan Review - Master Plan review in accordance with State of Michigan planning statues.
