In order for each of us to truly have the opportunity for our cases to be heard by our peers, our peers need equal opportunity to participate in the process. This is also true for those with transportation issues.
Here in the motor city, we don't always make it easy for people without motors of their own. One of the most common excuses used by potential jurors is a lack of transportation to the courthouse. And for those that do drive, it can be harrowing to maneuver through downtown Mount Clemens congestion and then find a place to park.
To solve this problem, the County Clerk got together with the "Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation" - or SMART as most of us know them - to offer free bus rides to jurors.
Now, accurate route information is provided to those that request the service as well as vouchers for a free ride.
For those that live too far from a pick-up point, door-to-door service can sometimes be arranged. This project provides not only equal access to jury duty but also encourages people to get to know public transportation and reduce motorized traffic coming in and out downtown. And, with today's gas prices, it really is a more affordable way to do one's civic duty.
